Utah's Online Library
This online library has a plethora of reading materials. There are many databases full of articles of varying Lexile levels. It also has World Book Encyclopedia for Kids and Students. A great resource when trying to find close reading materials. Students can access this resource at school or at home. |
Wonderopolis
Don't even know where to start finding reading articles for your class? Students are naturally curious. This website addresses that curiosity. It has a wonder of the day answering questions like are ghosts real or will a watermelon really grow in my stomach. Each short reading passage also has vocabulary that students can test themselves on, a short (usually only a couple of questions) quiz about what they read, and then links to websites to learn more. A great resource to use on a daily basis. |
Newsela
This is an excellent site when working with students of all different reading levels. Students can read the same article at different lexile levels. This would allow all students to understand what they are reading and could lead to great class discussions. It is also possible to create an account and have students take quizzes. Each article is categorized so you could easily have all students read a sports article for example and then discuss it. They have recently added Spanish articles, great for native speakers and those that are just learning. |
Tween Tribune
This website, published by the Smithsonian, is similar to Newsela. It allows students to read the same article but on different lexile levels. You can log in and create a classroom which gives you access to quizzes and other options. Clicking on "Teachers" in the top corner will give you access to lesson plans and more. |
